Naomi Novik, the bestselling author of the Temeraire series, has been seen running all around the San Deigo Comic-Con 2008. With her beaming smile and tireless energy, she sat on several panels, held several autographings, and yet still found time to buy the toys, statues, and paintings she needed for her return home!
Naomi started her day with a video interview conducted by her editor, Betsy Mitchell, at the Del Rey booth. The big round silver prop held by the videographer’s lovely assistant helped properly light the interview. That interview will be posted on YouTube within a few days.
San Diego Comic-Con holds one of the largest autographing areas of any convention. It is a massive square area holding dozens and dozens of signing booths. At any given moment, there can be more than a hundred people signing for hundreds and hundreds of fans. After her first panel, Naomi and her fellow panel-mates (which included Connie Willis, Peter David and Jacqueline Carey) made their way to the autographing area where they preceded to meet, converse, and sign books for their fans. In this photo, one of those fans produced a toy figure of the dragon Temeraire and gave it to Naomi as a gift. As you can see, she was delighted by it!
Peter David (Tigerheart, The Gunslinger Born) poses with Naomi for a photo near the end of their autographing session! As you saw from the posted short video, Peter thought that toy figure of Temeraire was pretty cool indeed!
After Naomi left her autographing and had a chance to walk around the convention to buy fun goodies, she made her way to the Random House after-convention party where she preceded to battle author Greg Bear (Darwin’s Radio, City at the End of Time) for supremacy of the ping pong table. It was a long-fought war…still not sure who won!
