Remember when comics and movies were just fun. When box office earnings, plot, character development, and whether a book was on schedule or not didn’t matter? When all that mattered was if the comic had two big guys smashing stuff in an all out fight or if the movie’s heroes showed up to save the day just in the nick of time? Well, if you’ve forgotten how that felt, I encourage you to check out The Kid’s Comic Book Reviews. More after the jump.
In full disclosure, The Kid is my seven year old nephew Liam. Geek is in his DNA and his younger brother’s as well. Between myself and their father they didn’t have a fighting chance. To their credit, they’ve both honestly grown to love it. Liam was there opening day for The Dark Knight and he loved every minute of it. They make the weekly pilgrimage to the local comic book shop with their father and they each have specific books they like to read. A few weeks ago, Liam blasted his father’s comic book choices (he thought “Spider-Man looked really dumb on one of the covers”) and said that he “should be on the Internet too because he could tell people what good books are and which ones were bad.”
And now he is. Each week Liam selects his books and reads them with his father. He takes some time to gather his thoughts, and than he dictates his review to his father who posts them on Liam’s blog. Occasionally his brother, Ethan, will contribute as “Sidekick.” The response has been very positive and PW’s The Beat linked to the blog last week.
I encourage you to check out the site and read some of the entries. Even if you’re not familiar with the books themselves, it will remind you what it felt like when you were a kid and the coolest thing was the Green Hulk fighting a Red Hulk and a ton of stuff getting wrecked in the process.
Also, be sure to scroll down for their Star Wars: The Clone Wars review. Pure joy. That’s how I felt when I saw the original Star Wars.

This is too awesome! It’s like suddenly I was reminded of all the times when I was young and doing things like this. Of course, I didn’t have the internet to post my reviews on, but I did dictate them to whichever family member happened to be in earshot.
You know, with so many analytical breakdowns (some good, some overcooked), it’s so refreshing to get this kind of a take on stuff. Bravo and thanks for posting this!
Yay! I saw this on The Beat last week and thought it was awesome, even not knowing it was your nephew. Reading Liam’s reviews really does take me back to why I love this stuff in the first place.
Thank you both. I was so depressed after reading all the hateful and negative fanboy reactions to Clone Wars. I hadn’t even seen the movie yet and it was angering me. Than I read Liam and Ethan’s review of it and I excited again. I wound up liking the movie, partly because I kept picturing the two of them and their excitement over it.
And Liam’s Batman/Superman review simply made me laugh. I know I’m biased in their favor, but I just can’t wait to read the reviews each week. It just makes me happy.
