I have been a voracious reader since I was about 13 when I first discovered The Sword of Shannara by Terry Brooks. Ever since then I couldn’t get enough of the science fiction and fantasy genre. To me, the genre allows writers to analyze what is going on in our real world, holding a magnifying glass up to problems we face today—or lets us escape from that reality for a while!

That means, however, there are a lot of books coming out and I only have so much time! So after looking at my book pile, I decided to pick out some of them and let you all decide what I should read next!
So post your comment below? Which of the books above should I read next? I’ll try to make this a weekly endeavor—read and review one book a week. I’ll compile the votes on August 16th and that following Sunday I will begin reading the book everyone has chosen for me!
Do your best… errr… or worst?!

Of the six, I’ve read three. I recommend, in this order:
1. The Name of the Wind – Simply the best thing I’ve read in several years.
2. Lies of Locke Lamora – A great first novel. I love the world-building.
3. Throne of Jade – One of those books where I disappear from the world for a weekend to read it all at once.
You should read Watchmen.
Read Throne of Jade – how can you resist dragons??
Hmmmmm….some really great selections here. Despite my admiration for The Watchmen, I’m tossing my support behind Greg Bear’s City at the End of Time. Just plain good story.
Watchmen, simply because you’ll want to get the story into you long before it gets over-spoiled, or before the media images start to color your perceptions of how things should look. Plus, it’s a fast read and will help you feel good about beating down that pile.
I was hoping this would happen: everyone giving a different answer. haha
Well, you can’t go wrong with either the Lynch or the Rothfuss, though the Novik is quite good as well.
Or you could read City at the End of Time to let me know if I should give it a shot!;-)
Good reading to you!
The Name of the Wind is just slightly better than The Lies of Locke Lamora. My votes go in that order.
The Ancient is nowhere near the level of those other novels.
Simple:
The Lies of Locke Lamora
Why not read them all? C’mon Speakman!
Having read all of them*, I can say (for me) Watchmen is the best. Then again, the book is in my top 5/10 of all time and I find myself reading it at least once per year.
The third Novik book, while good, is where I started to lose my connection with the story.
* well, actually I’m reading Bear’s novel right now and I’m finding it interesting.
Who can resist Greg Bear? For that matter, who would want to? City at the End of Time has my vote!
I agree with Gallegos, you should read Watchmen before any of the movie images are cemented in your head. If it weren’t for the movie, though, it wouldn’t be #1 on my list for you–Throne of Jade would be.
The Lies of Locke Lamora
or
The Name of the Wind.
Two of the best fantasy debuts in quite some time.
‘Lies of Locke Lamora’ and then ‘The Name of the Wind’!
I wish I had your job…
I’d go for Watchmen. From everything I’ve heard, it’s great.
The Lies of Locke Lamora….great book, inspite of the rampant use of profanity.
Watchmen, because I couldn’t find it at Borders to read.
Greg Bear, because I want to know if it’s good or not.
Watchmen is such a quick read that you could read it and any one of the other longer books. So I would recommend Watchmen and Lies of Locke Lamora. With Throne of Jade a close third.
Read The Ancient
I just picked one, I haven’t read any of them.
Name of the Wind and Lies of Locke Lamora are *almost* even for top picks.
In the end, I’d recommend reading Name of the Wind, then Lies.
Everything you’ve heard about The Name of the Wind isn’t true…because it’s EVEN BETTER than the hype would suggest. Rothfuss is a legend in the making.
I’ve read four of them and they were all really great reads but to give a ranking on best to least best IMO is: Watchmen, Lies of Locke Lamora, Name of Wind, Throne of Jade. As a whole I do think Lies is better then Name of Wind. I did love name of wind but I thought overall plot, originality, and emotion in Lies trump name of wind ( it just didn’t seem to bring something new to the table as lies did).
Throne of Jade! The Temeraire series is great, and fun!
(Plus, it is the only one that I’ve read)
City at the End of Time is simply stunning! Read it now.
The Name Of The Wind One of the best books I have read in a while.
