Discover Douglas Clegg – FREE!

Clegg offers his novel, Afterlife free online.

A short while ago I wrote a little post about authors who are beginning to give their stories away in the hopes of generating an audience (and thereby a market) for their work. And guess what? It just so happens that Douglas Clegg, one of my favorite horror authors is offering his book Afterlife for free reading.
The whole book! Free! Talk about getting your weekend off to a great start. I was geeking out over the release of Christopher Paolini’s new Inheritance novel Brisingr and now there’s free Douglas Clegg on the menu…
Did I get hit by a bus this morning? Is this heaven?
More after the jump… (including a free book from Douglas Clegg!)

Clegg is no stranger to offering large portions of his work for free. Previously, he had offered a substantial portion of his first novel, Goat Dance, online for free reading (and as a direct result gained me as a fan. That chunk of novel was enough to turn me into a Clegg fan). That was was just a sample though, this is the entire book. You can click over to the Scribd website to read it there, read it here in the widget, or download the pdf from Scribd. But I should warn you – Clegg’s writing is infectious and you just might find yourself traveling to your local bookstore to pick up a few more of his titles.
I would call him one of horror’s best kept secrets, the guy who’s name deserves to be bigger than it is. Clegg succeeds in creating characters that feel well rounded and fully realized and as a result you really begin to emotionally invest yourself in the outcome of the story. That and he is really good at creeping me out. But why take my word for it? Check it out for yourself.
Happy Free Friday from your friends here at Suvudu!

Afterlife is a brilliant novel. You can’t go wrong with anything by Clegg, and this is probably among his least-known books. Hopefully this will rectify that.

Thanks! I’m excited to start this one. I know I mentioned this in the post, but I can remember finding the Goat Dance “teaser” (if you can call something that size a teaser) and having my first real Clegg experience.
I was working in a library at the time and it was a particularly slow day. We were not allowed to be seen reading at the check out desk (don’t ask me why, I couldn’t say) so we took every opportunity to read ebooks instead. I was so caught up in the story that I ended up working over an hour past my scheduled time just so I could finish my reading. And of course, he chose a pivotal moment in the story to end the sample, so from work I drove immediately to the bookstore to purchase the novel.
Talk about an eye opening experience. I kept thinking, “Why in the world have I not read this guy before?! How could I have missed him?” I mean, the horror genre was my first true love as a reader, my gateway genre you could say, so I thought I was up on all the best authors. I’m hoping everyone else out there finds Mr. Clegg too. He’s just so darned good!

  3. Thank you so much for such a great note, Kyle!
