Ever since I grew weary of reading erroneous facts behind bandied about online concerning George R. R. Martin’s A Dance With Dragons, and ever since I wrote my article In Defense of George R. R. Martin, discussion has increased many fold between those who slander George and those who defend him. It has been great fun for me to read both sides and reaffirm my own feelings on the subject, as well as learn a few things I hadn’t known before I wrote the article.
I wish some of the naysayers could learn as easily and toss aside their misconceptions.
Well, it looks like all of those discussions have reached George himself.
Yesterday George posted two entries on his website concerning some of these discussions, accompanied by a status update of A Dance With Dragons:
In short, I applaud George for saying something on the subject as well as updating his fans about A Dance With Dragons—even if it will probably stir the pot even more. It was also nice to have him speak on some of the very things I wrote about in my article…
And maybe we’ll get A Dance With Dragons this fall!
Keep those fingers, toes and dragon tails crossed!

Hello Shawn, I’ve been a fan of fantasy for the last 20 years. Over the recent weeks I have read some of the comments regarding DWD. I can understand some peoples views, I was one of those people who attended a the book signing in Manchester in 2005, where GRRM made reference to the published date of DWD.
In one respect I’m really glad that the comments have at least made GRRM post a new update…even if he does sound a little p****d off.
I can’t imagine it will change the opinions of the detractors only fuel the debate even further.
I’m sure I’m not the only fan wishing the book was here and now…but I take comfort in the fact that it will evenually arrive..when it does…it will only go to reaffirm GRRM superiority in the field of fantasy.
I also take comfort in the fact that fantasy is in a renaissance at the moment and there are absolutely loads of new fantasy writers worth reading in-between DWD being published.
ecthelion: It’s sad that the thing I am most looking forward to when Dragons is released isn’t the book but the fact that George will once again have a clean slate.
The “detractors” won’t have anything to say at that point. They will have their completed book and then George will get three years to write the next volume. Of course, I know certain websites won’t go away and they will continue to nail George left and right every time he posts about the NFL or Wild Cards.
I hope at that point people become vocal and shout those people down. Because at that point is simple libel, nothing more.
