New Photos from Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland

In case you haven’t seen – new photos from Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland were released this week and they look amazing. I really can’t wait to see this film (we’ve got a while wait to yet, though, as it’s not out until March 5, 2010). Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter are unrecognizable, which I like in movies like this. I don’t want to be staring at Depp’s handsome mug while trying to pretend he’s the Mad Hatter. That would just be too brain-consuming.

I won’t be seeing this. I think Burton has went way over the top with the costume designs and is destroying a wonderful story.
And yes, I know. This isn’t a Disney classic story. This is supposed to be a dark Victorian tale as it was originally written. But the Mad Hatter is just far too over the top, even for his character. Nah, I think this has crossed the line over to mockery of said tale.
But that’s just me. It will make millions and millions — simply because Depp is in it. Eh, but I won’t be one of em. Enjoy all!

Ooh! I’m excited! While it may be true that Tim Burton sometimes attaches himself to less than awesome projects *cough*PlanetoftheApes*cough* (to be fair, he has admitted this weakness: “I wouldn`t know a good script if it bit me in the face.”) I can’t help but look forward to his latest creation. I do so love a good romp into the mind of Tim Burton! The book itself is such a mix of bizarre and random and I think Burton will bring a whole new level of dark imagery to the classic tale. Plus, it’s not your regular Wonderland story! I hear this adaptation has a bit of a sequel feel. Yay for new material! And you know what, I’m just glad casting didn’t ruin Alice with a Dakota Fanning or someone I’ve already had the chance of becoming annoyed with.

I wonder, looking at these photos (which are beautiful), how much of this movie will be live-action and how much of it will be computer generated? Also, I have to wonder when graphic artists and digital animators will start to be paid and recognized like movie stars? I suppose studios are recognized right now, but I’m sure that inside those studio walls there are teams or individuals who are earning reputations for great work. Just curious…

I agree with Shawn–but maybe for different reasons. I’m kind of done with Tim Burton. I never thought I’d say that, but what was the last good movie he did? I can’t even remember. Beetlejuice? I’m also not convinced the Tim Burton/Johnny Depp pairing works for me–how many times do we have to watch these two do what seems to be the same thing, over and over.

The costumes are impressive, but I’m not a huge Tim Burton fan; and I agree, the Mad Hatter does seem a little over done. I doubt I’ll see this film just because I’m tired of all the re-makes Hollywood is doing lately. I’d like to see some fresh scripts get pushed through. I’ve heard the next big thing for Hollywood will be making films based of board games, like Monopoly.
