Labor Day Weekend essentials:
Barbecues…check.
Laying out at the beach… check.
Star Trek… check.
Okay, I know Star Trek isn’t everyone’s idea of something to do this holiday weekend, but I just had to add it to my list–the newest movie in the franchise is making its way back into IMAX theatres with a limited release beginning this Friday!
And Labor Day is meant to celebrate the achievements of workers and unions, right? So why not take it a step further and spend some time with the hard-working crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise?
I love this movie so much I’d scream it from the rooftops…or at least from the comfort of my desk via Suvudu. This reboot of the Star Trek franchise, helmed by director J.J. Abrams, was one of the best reviewed movies this summer (believe me–I checked Rotten Tomatoes as if my life depended on it) and if you haven’t seen it in theatres, here’s one more chance.
Watch it for the action and adventure, watch it for the–unexpected!–romance, or watch it to find the Trek-lore Easter eggs you missed out on (one word: tribbles!).
Star Trek hits DVD and Blu Ray in November 2009… but since patience is a virtue that I most definitely do not have, I’m making it a priority to see this movie (even with all its lens flare glory) in IMAX again this weekend.
Check out Fandango.com to find a theatre playing Star Trek: The IMAX Experience near you.

I think “Lost in Space” was a much better movie.
[resulting flame war causes Random House server to overheat, starting small fire in telco hotel which goes unnoticed during the understaffed holiday weekend.]
(lots of nits to pick… like why didn’t the robo-cop use an EMP blast or tractor beam to stop the car and save JTK? And eastern Iowa is not flat like Nebraska. And why didn’t Uhura talk to Spock in Vulcan?)
Hey… I might have missed it here, but did you see the cool pinstriped Enterprise that Jim Lee painted?
…did you just say Lost in Space was better…?
URGE TO KILL RISING
Just kidding, sorta. I have to wonder if you mean some other movie than the one with that dude from Friends in it. Because if that’s the one you mean, then I am seriously confused. In a friendly way, of course, but confused.
“And the monkey flips the switch.” – Major West with what I consider the best line in Lost in Space
I’ll be seeing Star Trek FINALLY this weekend, and at an IMAX, no less. Great! Thanks for the heads up!
I can see Seth Meyers already getting a “Really??” segment ready for Weekend Update:
Really? Lost in Space? Really? Because that movie had Matt LeBlanc in it, and the best movie he did had a chimp overshadowing him.
Really? The terrain of Iowa bothered you? Really? Because last I checked, there weren’t huge canyons there, either. Also–in a movie about aliens and spaceships, you’re worried about the accuracy of Earth geography?
Really?
Watch out Torsten! They’re getting the flame throwers primed – take cover!
Lost in Space? Torsten, I have to agree with Kyle and David on this one…
I have some minor nitpicks about Star Trek, but I was really happy with the overall feel of the film. Even when the credits came up I was ready to watch the whole thing over again, right then and there. Maybe we’ll address Star Trek nitpicks later in a DVD/BluRay review?
And thanks for the heads up on Jim’s Enterprise… The Enterprise Project gallery (http://www.startrekmovie.com/modelgallery/) is awesome.
Shawn, enjoy the movie!
