Now THIS is how you cut a cake

There are certain things you come to expect when you turn five years old. A party. Cake. And let’s not forget blowing out the birthday candles.
So when publisher Del Rey Manga turned five, certain things made sense. A party (teaming up with the New York Anime Festival). Cake (from Charm City Cakes, made famous by Food Network’s Ace of Cakes show). But when it came to blowing out the cake, we swapped it out for something a little more manga-friendly: cutting the cake–with a samurai sword.
Click here to watch Dallas Middaugh, associate publisher of Del Rey Manga and impromptu samurai swordsman…

In a scene that could really only happen in the otaku world, throngs of fans–in cosplay and otherwise–crowded Dave & Buster’s Times Square Thursday evening to watch the official Del Rey Manga cake-cutting ceremony. But when an average knife proved too small to handle the impressive manga-themed cake, in swooped marketing manager Ali Kokmen with a sword destined to cut the cake (and fulfill many a hungry otaku’s dreams).
Check out the video here (I personally had my heart stop out of fear excitement at 1:43.)

Special thanks (which will be repeated over and over again) to Peter Tatara, the New York Anime Festival, and Dragon Song Forge.

Now that’s the kind of blade I need in my kitchen; suddenly the difficulty level of cutting cold butter would decrease dramatically…though self-inflicted bagel-cutting injuries might increase.
But where would I put it?

That cake looks amazing. I wonder if the microbes are edible.
…Yeah I registered just to say that.
