What Do I Watch Now?

It is one of the burdens of my life that I am a fan of the Detroit Tigers.
This isn’t nearly as bad as being, say a Chicago Cubs fan, but it does mean my season came to a rather abrupt end on Monday.
It also means I’m scrounging around for something to watch.
I don’t have a lot of time for TV in my life. Between the writing and the seven-year-old and wanting to spend a little time talking with the DH (Darling Husband), there isn’t a lot left over. And in the baseball season, I watch baseball, which I like to think of as the ultimate in Reality TV (although with steroids and all we could debate the reality part) and competitive cooking shows, which are an embarassing private vice that we need never mention again.
But I do like TV (as you can maybe tell from my last post on The Twilight Zone). I like dramas and mysteries and SF. Comedies, not so much anymore because they seem to have gotten very mean spirited. But I’m stuck this season as to finding something NEW to watch. Bones has jumped the shark past David Boreanez’s ability to salvage. Torchwood looks to be heading down a similar path. I’m wary of the new Dr. Who. I tried “Glee” because I adore musicals, but couldn’t get past the first 15 minutes and a lot of new dramatic TV, if you’re not watching every episode from the get-go (something even with DVRs I rarely get to do) you can’t follow the plot and as the baseball season ends some weeks after the new TV season begins, which kind of leaves me at a disadvantage.
So. What are you watching? What are you enjoying? What’s worth checking out this season, and more importantly, what can I get started on several weeks in?

Is Torchwood still going on? I was under the impression it had ended with Children of the Earth…?
Anyway, most of my TV schedule is filled with comedies, but have you tried Mad Men? I like it because it’s set in 1960s New York (women had it tough!) and is written very well. (Sundays at 10pm/9central on AMC)
Dexter is another great series that just started its 4th season, but it’s not really one of those shows you can pop in and out of, episode-wise. (on Showtime I don’t know when…)
It’s tough to watch drama shows these days if you haven’t seen every episode. If I like a show, I make sure to see every episode, but there are some I can watch on the spur of the moment and not be bothered by any of that “Last time, on…” stuff. Like The Mentalist. The main character is a hoot, but I don’t feel like I have to keep track of this series to enjoy it. (Thursdays at 10pm/9central on CBS)

You know, I wrote an article about things I was looking forward to this Fall. It’s called A Look Ahead. In it, I list some of my favorite shows that are returning: Sanctuary and Fringe. I also mention one I’m interested in, simply titled “V.”
If you haven’t been watching Eureka on SyFy, then you really should check it out. It’s one of the best shows on television, in my humble opinion. It’s probably easiest to find it on Hulu now, as its run of new episodes has concluded for this year.
And, I’ll plug NOVA as one of my all-time favorite non-fiction entries.
    Those are my suggestions.

I hear you on the Tigers. (sigh)
I’ve gotten into Supernatural — sharply written and much wittier than you might expect.

  4. Shawn Speakman says:

Tigers shot themselves in their paws. Stupid. I would have liked to watch Verlander and Porcello pitch some more — and against the Spankees, no less!
I only watch House MD anymore. I might be missing out on some great shows but it’s all I need to feel intellectually stimulated. The writers on that show are great and Hugh Laurie is a fantastic actor.

  5. C.L. Anderson says:

Haven’t heard of Eureka. I’ll have to have a look. Is “V” the remake of the series from the 80s?
Nova has been very good for a very long time.

  6. C.L. Anderson says:

Torchwood should be continuing, but yeah, Children of Earth was the last of this season (and BOY were the actors pissed about rather abruptly finding out they were only going to have a 6 ep. “season”). I haven’t watched the CoE sequence yet and I’m waffling. It seems like they’ve gotten into angst-for-angst’s-sake on that one.

COULD they have left the bases loaded just a COUPLE more times in that tiebreaker?
“I’ve gotten into Supernatural — sharply written and much wittier than you might expect.”
They had me when they did an episode about the Lover’s Lane Hook Murderer. I adore urban legend.

It was painful. I’ve got to agree with a friend of mine, it all fell apart when they got into that beanball match with the Red Sox.
“I only watch House MD anymore. I might be missing out on some great shows but it’s all I need to feel intellectually stimulated. The writers on that show are great and Hugh Laurie is a fantastic actor.”
No argument on Laurie’s acting chops. The guy is great. I have to confess, however, I am the only person on earth who does not like House.

C.L., EUREKA airs on the SyFy Channel. It’s light-hearted SF about a company town full of mad scientists.
CASTLE is on Monday nights (and Hulu), and it’s terrific. Premise: an incredibly-successful mystery novel with writer’s block tags along with a homicide detective for inspiration. There’s great chemistry between the leads and neither character is Holmes to the other’s Watson.
Also, Castle is so rich and successful that the show officially qualifies as writer porn.
You might want to give BURN NOTICE a try, too, either online or on DVD. It’s on USA, which has a couple of fun mysteries–I know a lot of folks enjoy PSYCH, although it’s on at a time I can’t watch.
And I can’t stand HOUSE either.

  10. Kyle M. says:

Ohhhh…PSYCH is a fun time. It’s kinda like like a Private Eye mystery show with a healthy dose of silly. It’s fun and never asks too much of you.

  11. izikavazo says:

Hmm, there are so many shows.
True Blood pops out. Just don’t relate it to Twilight and you’ll be fine.
Psych is awesome (high five Kyle M.), and it’s not mean spirited comedy, it’s mostly just nostalgic comedy.
You could go back and watch Rome or Carnivale. Those are the DVDs that I tend to give bored friends.
And there are my two favorite shows Lost and Arrested Development.
If you haven’t watched Pushing Daisies or United States of Tara you could check them out.
