If you’ve been keeping up with video gaming over the past 10 years, then you know that the experience that gaming can provide is becoming downright cinematic, and that’s not just because of the graphics capabilities and boundaries the gaming industry keeps pushing. The increased disc space, be it on a physical medium (CD) or a hard drive, has allowed game writers to create rich and intricate storylines for the games, some of which can be adaptable to how you play the game.
And yet, it’s next to impossible to make a decent movie based on a game. We don’t need to look very far for proof of this, BUT, as it turns out, you can write a pretty good novel based on video game characters.
It makes sense actually, writers have been expanding on the characters and adventures of movie characters for years and the creativity and complexity being offered up in today’s games means you can start with an already complex character and get right into an incredible yarn.
And then there’s the talent involved in writing these stories. Writers like Karen Traviss (Gears of War), Eric Nylund (Halo), William C. Dietz (Halo), Drew Karpyshyn (Mass Effect), and others ensure that the books are as deep and rewarding as the games.
