MAMOTTE! LOLLIPOP (Mamotte! Lollipop, “Protect! Lollipop”) ????????????• Michiyo Kikuta • Del Rey (2007-ongoing) • Kodansha (Nakayoshi/Nakayoshi Next, 2002-2005) • 7 volumes • Shôjo Fantasy Action Comedy • 13+ (mild violence, brief partial nudity, mild sexual situations)
A kids’ action comedy by Michiyo Kikuta, former assistant of Pink Hanamori (Pichi Pichi Pitch). When junior high school student Nina accidentally swallows a magic “crystal pearl” which is the focus of the big wizard exam, teenage wizards and witches keep trying to catch her to get the magic inside. Two cute boy wizards, Zero and Ichi, vow to protect her from their fellows, while assorted incompetent magic-users attack them, blasting them with fireballs, turning them into babies and animals, trying to seduce them, etc. At its best it’s a fairly funny shojo gag manga, and at only seven volumes with a change in the storyline in volume four, the series doesn’t outstay its welcome. However, the art is hectic and awkward (though it gradually improves over the course of the series) and shows the signs of too many assistants drawing in different styles; the cover art often barely resembles the interiors, which barely resemble Kikuta’s personal notes in the back.
Today’s winner is Chad B. of Georgia. Congratulations, Chad! Hope you enjoy your forthcoming manga!
