The 3D Invasion

It’s official, Clash of the Titans and both parts of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows will be released in 3D. While neither movie was shot specifically for 3D, the conversion tests the studio has been doing on Clash of the Titans were so Alice.jpgsuccessful they decided to release Harry Potter in 3D as well. The true reason behind this is money of course. Much of Avatar’s record breaking box office has come from IMAX and 3D ticket sales, which on average are about $3 more than a regular ticket price. It’s going to be interesting to see what happens in March though when three big ticket 3D movies - Alice in Wonderland, How to Train Your Dragon, and Clash of the Titans (Note: Clash was just moved to April 2 to distance itself from the other 3D pics)- are released within weeks of themselves. Will theaters have the resources to show all three in 3D? And will Avatar still be around to further crowd the 3D market place?
how to train your dragon.jpgI’ve also found all the differing opinions on 3D to be interesting. While I loved Avatar and thought the extra dimensional effect really brought added value to the movie I’ve spoken with friends who flat out didn’t like it and saw it simply as a gimmick. “Name one movie that would have been better in 3D?” a friend challenged me. After thinking about it for a moment I answered Raiders of the Lost Ark. Just imagine the opening sequence in the temple in 3D? The darts and spears flying across the screen? The boulder chasing Indy? Other sequences throughout the movie would be dynamite in 3D as well.
What do you think of this sudden explosion of 3D and what classic movie would you like to see in 3D?

Imagine seeing this classic in 3D? George/Steve, convert the sucker and rerelease it. PLEASE!

That is awesome news! I can’t wait to see Clash of the Titans. I sincerely hope they’re also going to make Percy Jackson 3D…
