After Ayumi’s twin brother Atsushi dies in an accident, the troubled, misanthropic Ayumi tries to assume his twin’s identity as a beloved honor roll student. But his classmate Kirishima, who may have been Atsushi’s lover, sees through the ruse to Ayumi’s dark nature beneath. The three other stories in the collection, from the mystery “The Scent of Midnight” to the fairy-tale-like “The Abyss Pool,” also focus on dark secrets and forbidden, repressed homosexual passions. The sex is minimal, but elegant figure artwork and interesting, graceful plots make it a memorable book.
