ELEMENTS • Kamogawa Tanuki • Icarus Publishing (2007) • France Shoin (2003) • 1 volume • Adult • 18+ (nudity, graphic sex)
Silent, emaciated schoolboys get all their sexual dreams fulfilled in the insipid Elements. Women are obsessed with sex and men need do nothing but stand around being pleasured all day (and night). The amateurish artwork combines with random, free-floating speech bubbles and impossible-to-follow panel transitions to create a boringly incomprehensible romp through an introvert’s libido. Despite the flood of genitalia and various fluids, it never manages to capture any sense of excitement. Everything remains stilted, artificial and permeated by a feeling of being slightly off. At least it stays with wish-fulfillment and doesn’t meander too far toward the violent end of things. (Review by Derek Guder)
