Dark Elf Ranger

Disadvantages

Kills

  • Locke Lamora (Trust us–he’s really dead)
  • Conan the Barbarian (Get a job, you lazy barbarian!)
  • Roland Deschain (Probably why your guidance counselor suggested “gunslinger” wasn’t a good career choice…)
Kills

  • Kahlan Amnell (I must confess–I didn’t see this one coming)
  • The Shrike (Your time is up)
  • Ged (Ged’s dead, baby)
How we think the fight will go

Rand Al’Thor stood across the arena from Drizzt. They both seemed serious–they had come a long way and defeated many great champions along the way. But the respect that they held for each other was tempered by the fact that they had to try to kill one another.

Drizzt drew his scimitars, his familiar Guenhwyvar prowling behind him.

Rand Al’Thor called forth balefire, and consumed them both.

Then he had a snack.

Predicted Winner: Rand Al’Thor

(Rand Al’Thor is a character from Robert Jordan’s The Wheel of Time series, currently written by Brandon Sanderson; Drizzt Do’Urden is a character created and written by R.A. Salvatore for the Forgotten Realms series)

I think this discussion is funny and entertaining so ddon’t think that i am stressed or mad. :-0
but to give you an answer. If something like that is being regarded as foolish, sho will ever expect such a move. Before Rand get over the shock that someone actually jump over him it may already be to late.
Also the whole somersault thing is just an example of how nimble and agile Drizz’t is. It’s not a thing that he uses in every fight or does automatically whenever someone tries to stab him.
The point is that he can bend his body in ways that make it verry hard for people to hit him. Also his attacks seem to come out of nowhere or from positions that would make any attacks impossible. He actually found a way to counter an attack that before would have killed him. He can dodge a stab to the chest and at the same time stick his scimitar in your side from the opposite direction.(im just giving an example)
Im just saying that it would be verry hard for Rand to hit Drizz’t or block his attacks that seem to come from impossible directions. Since agility is always an advantage in any swordfight Drizz’t would have the upper hand on Rand.

    HA HA HA HA HA
    “Rand is a real person.”

  3. Shadow'sBane says:

idiot that was a typing ERROR
what i meant that Rand is NOT a real person

  4. Drakey says:

The issue is, Rand has magic! And he can use that magic with a thought! And even if Drizzt is somehow resistant to it, Rand would just kill him with something else! And in return to the Astral plane thing with the deathgates, Drizzt would have left the ring and thus have lost…

  5. SaberCrazy says:

The whole question is, is the power the main form of magic in the WoT books?(well I guess even if it was a strand of magic in the WoT books) If so then in combining the two worlds Drizzt -WOULD- have resistance to it.
And despite Rand being the best swordsman ever… In his -past- life. Drizzt still has an advantage with his bracers of speed.
@TheAstralRebuttal: Would it really be leaving the ring? because technically he’s still in the area of the ring. He’s just on another plane.

  6. Seeful says:

Basically what I’m saying is that everything Rand has faced so far is like the 1000+ goblins Drizzt kills on his way to fight the wizard.
Its a challenge and sometimes he gets hurt, but his real oppenent (The Dark One) is so much more powerful than he is, that he is the underdog.

  7. Vindici says:

Bracers of speed, gloves of missing fingers, pants of infinite prowess in bed. Damn that sounds ridiculous.

  8. permabanman says:

The only reason Rand wins is because balefire is pretty much an “I WIN” button.
But you know, screw that. Why doesn’t Rand lose to Lews Therin for a change and balefires himself out a desire to free himself from his endless torment.
    Drizzt wins by default.
Actually, Rand only needs to be distracted for a bit while Drizzt scissors off his hand, which is to say, for like half a second.

  9. V says:

Why, does Drizzt have an ability to teleport? Or will the fight begin with them embracing each other? Then half a second, of course, would suffice for the elf to unclench their brotherly hug, finger his, umm, Twinkle and commit a vio… homicide.

  10. HamsterDesTodes says:

I realy dont understand why everybody thinks balefire is an instant win. Its not. In fact, its absolutly useless.
Balefire removes threads from the pattern. Unfortunatly no other author based his/her universe on threads, so theres nothing to remove.
Thats not to say Rand would be able to lose to a melee fighter, because he couldnt (except by shooting his own foot of course). There are too many instant-death weaves or even non-fatal ways to stop a melee fighter before said melee fighter ever comes into range. Just open a gate (leading to outside of the arena) in front of the opponent, if he moves Rand wins by default. If he doesnt move just open the gate a bit closer, closer, closer until it opens so close that it cuts of his nose, that may make him move at last ;)
But balefire? bah, balefire is crap. And Rand wouldnt even try to use it anyway on anything but the forsaken.
But magican(ranged)-vs-melee is inherently boooooring, unless something like Mat’s amulet comes into play.
Not that a swordfight between these two would be so much more interesting. Rands swordmanship may be good, but even asuming (for arguments sake) that Rand would have had a chance with two hands, he DID have this teeny burning accident, didnt he? So now Drizzt would cut him up in seconds, if Drizzt ever got into range.

  11. SaberCrazy says:

Well there’s always that chance that Rand could just throw a fireball and assume that it’s good and over, not knowing Drizzt has a incredible fire immunity due to Icingdeath. Thus letting Drizzt get close enough for a sword fight.
But then there’s always the chance Rand could just use da deathgate thing and cut Drizzt in half or whatever.

  12. alicelouise58 says:

Many people don’t realized that you can enjoy many levels of the same genre.
I enjoy Agatha Christie mysteries and her characters Miss Jane Marple and Hercule Poirot. I also enjoy reading Jeffrey Deaver’s mysteries and his characters of Lincoln Rhyme and Amelia Sachs. One is a light cozy type mystery the other is very dark with our protagonists having as many issues as the antagonists. To like one sort of mystery or sci-fi/fantasy does not mean you must hate all others lighter levels of the same genre.
One poster had said that it was for 15 year old adolescents. I’m all for teens reading. If you have the patience to go through a Harry Potter tome or Drizzt trilogy this can evolve to reading LOTR, Dickens, Beowulf, the Iliad, Odyssey, and the Aeneid.

  13. SaberCrazy says:

LotR the books is tons better then the movies, I love those books.

  14. Amen-Ra says:

YES!!! That Keebler elf step child has finaly died. Two rounds to late but he is dead. Dead, Dead, Dead!!! I propose that we make a rule that whoever dies in this dies in there actual world. Wait. If we do that then The Name of the Wind part 2 will not happen. Forget that proposal. I am off to dance on Drizzt grave.

  15. Drakey says:

But in the astral plane the ring doesn’t exist. And location in the astral plane doesn’t correspond to location in reality because if it did the summoning stone for the big cat(I’m too lazy to spell Guen’s name) would be totally useless.

  16. SaberCrazy says:

Amen-Ra, Don’t make me hurt you.
Planes are layed over each other meaning, really he’s still in the circle. He just can’t see where the bounds are.
Not saying anything about the fact that going to the astral wouldn’t help him any unless Rand was stupid enough to walk up to Guen’s statue and say her name summoning them both back by accident so Drizzt can gut him. But I doubt that’d happen.

  17. Amen-Ra says:

Sorry. I am still bitter about Drizzt beating the Shrike. No way it should have happened, but now its Jamie Vs Rand. Who will win?!?!

  18. SaberCrazy says:

I can see that but, don’t you think using keebler was a little over doing it? lol

  19. alicelouise58 says:

I thought you were a reasonable person, Amen-Ra. I think the reason Drizzt and others won against the Godlings was overall rebellion from the fans. After all, it’s no fun having 50 ton megaton nukes in the final.
    Here’s my take:
Rand unleashed Balefire and Drizzt found himself not dead but, in a crowded arena. Two tall humans, male with a false hair cap and a yellow blond female with scarlet painted lips ran up to him and thrust some sort of wand at his face. They flanked him at either side.
“Dritz Dwarden you’ve had the most amazing run in this Cage Match but you didn’t reach the final. Do you feel your coach has just turned into a pumpkin?”
“No.” Not only had they incorrectly pronounced his name but, there were really bright lights. This in some ways was more trying than the previous 4 matches. He had no real quarrel with his last 3 live opponents, not even wit the Construct. He also had no idea of what the metaphor of “Coach to a Pumpkin” meant.
“A lot of people thought you had a chance againsnt Rand al’Thior. Are you disappointed?” said the yellow haired woman with the faint brown hair roots. She was speaking more at something unseen than Drizzt.
“No.” in truth he was glad to be alive and gratified to learn that this defeat not final.
“So who do you pick to win?” said the man with the false hair cap.
“I don’t know.” He had been told of Jaime Lannister and his kin. The Lannisters had much in common with the Drow Clans of the Underdark. He was a Kingslayer and attempted to murder a child by throwing him from a tower. Many like events had occurred in his peoples’ history. Yet, he couldn’t hate the man, Jaime Lannister. In many ways Jaime had been dealt immediate retribution. Drizzt strangely felt an empathy and compassion for Jaime Lannister.
Rand al’Thior? He had given much personal sacrifice in his world. At one time he must have been different, thought Drizzt.
Drizzt slipped through the 2 large humans. “Well done Dark Elf.” said the brown hooded figure that slipped beside the Drow. “I would call you friend. We may meet as allies the next time.” Drizzt hnoded to the Mage Ged.
Drizzt headed towards what looked like an exit. He was met by hooded figures and Guen. One stepped forward, he lowered the hood and bowed. It was Jarlaxle. “Have a good time?” he asked the grim ranger in a merry manner.
“You arranged this?” Drizzt asked though he knew the question was only of a rhetorical nature.
“The final match is at a place called King’s Landing and we’re all invited!” said Regis the other of the hooded figures.
“King’s Landing of Westeros,”, Jarlaxle enigmatically said, It’s where our world may be headed. I’m putting my money on the Lannisters. The Second Boy Tyrion is really why Jaime is in this Final.”
“Worry not Drizzt we’re in a shaded pavilion.” said Wulfgar.
    “Aegis=Fang?”
    “Later.” said Wulfgar
“And ye are goin’ with us Drizzt! No sitting in a dark room and moping! There’s very little of this magic to be had in Westeros. It’ll make it fair!” said Bruenor.

  20. SaberCrazy says:

    Nice work Alice. :D
Really Shrike was the only one Drizzt should have lost to.
Ged like the arguments in the Ged Vs. Drizzt area, Drizzt is trained to be as affective against wizard types as can be mortally possible.
And then he lost to Rand.(Which was highly probable, unless Rand had some pretty bad luck he was going to win)

  21. bob says:

Why hasn’t anybody thought of the obvious? Balefire burns the threads of things back in time THAT ARE PART OF THE PATTERN. None of these people Rand has gone up against are part of the pattern. Balefire wouldn’t have done anything to them but caused momentary spots in their vision. All of Rand’s fights should be rewritten.

  22. Bob's my uncle says:

    Agreed!
    8D best comment in thread!

  23. magniloquent says:

well bob, if you read most of the fights, you would see that the majority of Rand’s supporters denounce the Balefire abuse and suggest that there are hundreds of other ways that he could easily have crushed each of the opponents he has faced. Removing balefire doesn’t change the outcome, just the manner in which it comes to pass.

  24. Morsker says:

Balefire is countered by guerrilla tactics, porting around and blowing up where you think the other person ported to. In the two fights balefire is actually used in in WoT, this is what it comes down to. Rand has no special defense against ranged weapons.
Balefire is just a metaphor for modern weaponry. On the small scale it’s like artillery fire, but there are tactics to use against it. (It helps in fantasy where some people can teleport.) On the large scale, you can nuke cities with it but it has terrible moral and environmental consequences.
I hope there’s no more balefire in Rand’s future cage matches. :P It’s really boring if the opponent doesn’t have a way of reacting to it, and these ones haven’t.

  25. Drakey says:

But very small amounts of balefire don’t hurt much at all. And all of the other attacks Rand could use are just as instantaneous, without any negative results.

  26. tom says:

rand has such an edge that drizzt should CHEAT! throw jarlaxle into the mix!!

I just got here and have no idea where the hell i’m supposed to vote. Been looking around for a while…
I’m a huge Rand fan. From reading the some of the statements above, i assume this is where ppls are voting/predicting/writing? what will happen if the final match.
    Rand VS Jaime
Well, Balefires out of the picture, which doesn’t really have too big of an impact on the fight because Rand really didn’t use Balefire often (only about three times) before he went crazy in gathering storm, and with his character development at the end of the book it is highly unlikely he’d use it anyway. *mutters darkly*
anyway. Who will win? I didn’t get too far into George R.R Martins series, but as far as I know Jaime doesn’t have any magic/superpower/whatever abilities so I’d have to say. Rand beets him, unless that sword of his counters all magic/one power/whatever then well…
Jamie will win. Rand is a blade master, however he only has one freaken hand! So does Jamie but Rand probably hasn’t fully accustomed to it yet, not to mention he has to vomit every time he channels the one power or Ishmale (or however you spell his stupid name) dabbles in the True Power. So there is a chance of that happening.
There is also a chance of Jaime suddenly having a sudden personality make over causing him to have the sudden desire to leap of a cliff, paint his toe nails, or dance in the streets, none of which are very good things to do in the middle of a fight.
Then again, if it does come to fist Rand might break into kickboxing or any other of his Ail/kunfu moves that don’t require the use of both his hands.
But i really don’t know Jamie enough to know how this Match will turn out.
So. Personally, i’d like Rand to win, because he is pretty much awesomeness in a can. And I like Robert Jordan A LOT more than George Martin.
    So…
    GO RAND!

ops didn’t mean to post twice. It didn’t work the first couple of times *sorry*

  30. Dangerfield says:

Assuming that balefire doesn’t work because Drizzt isn’t part of the pattern means that we assume each story element is independent of the other and thus the One Power would not be treated as magic giving Drizzt no resistance to it.

  31. Mykal says:

    *rages at your balefire usage*
Just because no one else has yet :)
