Cage Match 2010: A Response from Rand Al’Thor to Jaime Lannister’s Challenge

A response from Rand Al’Thor to Jaime Lannister’s “challenge.”

**

Rand Al.jpg
“Ser Lannister, you do not fool me with your ‘challenge’–nor do I feel challenged in any way by our upcoming match.
“I will meet on whatever field of battle you deem fit; it makes no difference to me. If you prefer for your people to be able to see your demise, I salute that.
“Bring as many of your warriors as you can muster–you need not even limit yourself to seven.
“As for me? I will be alone, comforted in the knowledge that I have nothing to fear from any you.
“I wish you well, Jaime. For soon you will be nothing but a name in The White Book, just as you are nothing but a man in golden armor.”

**

Big words from Rand Al’Thor! But the gauntlet has been thrown, now (or, seeing how he’s one-handed, shaken off until it fell to the ground)–see who survives starting 10:30 EST tomorrow!
And make sure to check out Suvudu at 9:30 AM EST tomorrow, too. There’s that surprise we mentioned earlier…

Will Suvudu’s version of events be based on who Jaime (or Tyrion, as it sounds) decides to bring? Or will you leave that up to Mr. Martin?

  2. dpomerico says:

Not to give too much away, but our version is probably going to be different from George’s. In fact, in George’s, Rand might decide to bring along some friends.
The big hope, too, is that Brandon Sanderson decides to provide something–that would be the ultimate for everyone here, especially after George and Pat’s write-off.

I think he’s planning on Rand going solo. This is going to be epic.

  4. Ross says:

I loves me some Lannister! Jaime and Tyrion both. I hope for a victory for the Goldenhand but know that Rand is all sorts of bad news.
I have faith in the Seven though!
Tell him what time it is Jaime!

  5. jackie says:

Brandon just posted on his blog/FB that he would have gone in for Rand bringing seven and that he won’t be doing a write up because he has a killer deadline.

  6. trench says:

To bad Brandon has bowed out of due a deadline in 3 days. And the next wot books deadline fast approaching, well atleast he has a good work ethic.

  7. AHEM says:

Well, that kind of limits Rand, but won’t make much of a difference in the actual fight. Whether Jaime comes by himself or with every single person in Westeros who can hold a sword, Rand’s planet-shattering magic will get the job done in a hurry.

  8. archon says:

“Rand’s planet-shattering magic will get the job done in a hurry.”
…and luckily for those of us who like a story with real suspense, tension, and drama, That’s not cheesy or lame at all…
Jaime FTW by vicious revolt against lame Steven Segal characters.

  9. Aryador says:

“Whether Jaime comes by himself or with every single person in Westeros who can hold a sword, Rand’s planet-shattering magic…”
You still have not gotten George RR Martin’s idea behind this.
He was talking about characteres from ALL the works, both (or all three) authors have written about, even Conan, because Jordan has written about him.
Martin has written about much more than Westeros. He has some super heroes at his disposal, some kick-ass vampires who move faster than lightning. He could even write Sauron and the Nazgûls in, if he feels wicked, and if some of you don’t get this pun, check out his works.
Of course, I do agree, if he just matches firepower against firepower, it would be kind of lame. I hope he comes up at least with a funny twist.
BTW, Rand is not as invincible as he seems. Remember that he did not dare to face Grandael, because he feared whe might be way too smart for him?
The only thing I worry about is that George actually has not read the WoT serie, at least not compeletly. The way how he listed Rand’s advantages in his blog looks like he took them all from Suvudu, without sometimes knowing what they actually mean. In that case, the write up might be just as illogic as the one about Kvothe was. The good thing about the Cthulhu fight was that you could feel how well George RR Martin knew Cthulhu and its world. He used to play lots of Pen & Paper RPGs on Cthulhu, as he somewhere once mentioned.
Let’s wait for what comes out…

  10. Horza says:

Martin has read WoT cover-to-cover. It’s part of what got him writing fantasy. Tyrion probably hasn’t though :)
Rand has fucked up here. He’s gonna need all the help he can get against the Martinverse.

  11. The Wise says:

… The character portrayal of Rand at this site is incredibly inaccurate. Obviously whoever is writing him up hasn’t read a lick of wheel of time and if they have they really should be ashamed of themselves.
Do R.J some bloody justice and give the man the credit he deserves. Rand’s character development in the series is nothing short of phenomenal. You’re portrayal of him is insulting. If you are going to insult the man, as least put some damn effort into it!

  12. Laura says:

Sanderson said on Facebook that he does plan on writing for the cagematch. Hooray!

  13. Tomaszync says:

“Martin has read WoT cover-to-cover. It’s part of what got him writing fantasy. Tyrion probably hasn’t though :)
Didn’t GRRM first think of ASoIaF in 1991?

  14. archon says:

I’m sure that Steven Segal would be happy to know that you find his sort of characters “nothing short of phenomenal.”

  15. robot jura says:

I hope Jaime brings Beric Dondarrion with him. The man just can’t be killed. Muahahahaha!
It would also be nice to see Arthur Dayne (probably the best fighter in Westeros), Baelor Breakspear and Qhorin Halfhand (yes, the hand!) there.

  16. jackie says:

Sanderson has said exactly the opposite on the dual post to his blog/FB. (here: http://www.brandonsanderson.com/blog/883/Gemmel-Nominations-Audible-Tournament-Suvudu-Cage-Match–Updates) His only posts since have been updates on his progress toward his deadline.
Sanderson will not be doing a write-up.

  17. jackie says:

Yeah, I should actually read the links I post. Brandon amended his blog entry (below). My apologies Laura.
    –BRANDON’s BLOG–
(All, this originally said I wasn’t going to do a writeup. When I dictated this post to Peter, he misunderstood what I said and wrote that I wasn’t going to do a writeup. I’m totally planning to do one—I said I didn’t know if I could do one like GRRM did, in-character, because I wasn’t sure if it was appropriate. Rand doesn’t belong to me, and I don’t know if it would be right to do something from his eyes.
I AM however, planning to do a separate write up to talk about the match, maybe from my viewpoint. I’m not sure what I’ll do yet, but I am planning to squeeze in the time to do it, despite my deadlines. Sorry for the mixup. I was kind of mumbling when I told Peter about this, as I was working on something else, and I guess he thought I said I wasn’t going to do one at all. Back to the original post now.)
I look forward to seeing what George writes. The fans ultimately decide who comes out on top, so check Suvudu and start voting sometime tomorrow.

  18. Ghost says:

This is stupid, why speak for Sanderson with this post? He said on his blog he wanted to accept 7 vs. 7 before he saw this. Rand’s character would never make this statement either; he’s not this stupid, even if he can be arrogant during certain books of the series. Based on the writeups we’ve seen so far in this game, it’s pretty obvious that the authors haven’t read most of WoT.

  19. dpomerico says:

I actually wasn’t speaking for Sanderson–I hadn’t heard from Sanderson when I wrote this post. I was speaking for the Rand of the Cage Match, in response to Jaime.

  20. Emma de Laat says:

I also find it weird that someone else wrote for Rand. I personally won’t believe he would have declined the 7v7 match.
At least Min and Nynaeve would have forced him to take people with him…
It would be weird if he lost the fight, because he doesn’t have anyone with him.

  21. Daniel says:

I need to read more. I have no Idea what Rand is up against. I do know however that with Brandon’s Characters allowed he can bring Sazed, Susebron, and Bela.
I can see the outcome now.
Rand being generous ‘Here use my sword’ tosses Nightblood to opposing team, walks away.
