ESCAPE FROM EARTH DAY: Zombie Uprising or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Braaaaains

The walking/shambling/running dead: we know them, we fear them, and with good reason! Zombie-ism (or as I like to call it, “Zombitis”) has the distinction of being caused by a plethora of different, undetectable and fast-acting agents from tropical viruses to occult rituals to genetic modification. And the worst part? Zombitis is an exponentially increasing contagion, meaning that one zombie can turn into a hundred zombies in a matter of hours. If we a assume that each zombie will be able to attack and turn 3 individuals in one day, then we should expect complete zombification of the entire planet within a month. As for survivors, it is awful hard to outrun or outmatch a horde of shambling flesh-eaters when you no longer have the infrastructure or resources that our modern, globally-integrated societies provide. Within days of the outbreak all flights will be grounded indefinitely, freeways will be so packed with fleeing urbanites that they will become a parking lot for the undead masses to wander through as if they were on their way to the grocery store. Once all humans are devoured or turned into the dead, the zombies will run out of food and turn to cannibalism, reducing their numbers until there are none left. It is the end of the world as we know it, and I don’t feel fine.
Ways to defy this:
1. No occult resurrection rituals. You know, trying to bring back a dead loved one is sweet on a certain level, but are you really prepared to risk all of humanity for the sake of your significant other’s second shot at life?
2. Nuke ‘em if you’ve got ‘em. Is the zombie outbreak localized? Good, nuke the whole town. I think we’d all rather sacrifice a city of millions than a planet of billions. The nuclear option is the only way to be sure.
3. Islands in the Sun. It is common knowledge that zombies lack the mental capacity to swim, so get to a small island that is easily defendable and wait it out. After the zombie hordes have eaten themselves to death (pun very much intended), you alone can poke out your head and start to rebuild.
4. Pick up a copy of Recorded Attacks by Max Brooks. Devour. Literally. I mean figuratively!
