NYCC Video Interview: David Wellington

NYCC Video Interview: David Wellington

I’ve always had a weak spot for well-written horror and supernatural fiction. As a pre-teen, I was into Poe, in high school and college it was Stephen King, afterwards there was Straub and McCammon and Clegg to name a few.

And now there’s also Wellington. David Wellington, that is. He’s the guy who’s bringing monsters back to the realm of hunters and humans to the hunted. Already having taken on zombies with his “Monster” series (Monster Island, Monster Nation, and Monster Planet) and vampires in his Laura Caxton books (13 Bullets, 99 Coffins, Vampire Zero, and 23 Hours), Wellington is now turning his talents and attentions to werewolves with Frostbite and Overwinter.

Mixing dark humor, action, and a generous helping of blood, Wellington is reviving the idea that the things that go bump in the night are creatures to be frightened of, while the people they hunt must overcome their fear in order to stand against them. But while the monsters are back to being the baddies we all know and fear, David Wellington isn’t content to rest on stereotypes and conventions. Twisting the lore and reinventing the nature of these creatures—to a point—is how he rolls.

We caught up with David at this past New York Comic-Con and asked him a few questions. In this interview, he discusses his takes on monsters in fiction, writing female characters, creeping both himself and his friends out, and his favorite moment from the convention.
