Matt Staggs is back! He and Kyle M. talk about this past New York Comic-Con and some of their favorite moments as well as how they think it stacks up to the mega convention in San Diego. Kyle liked BOOM! Studios, Matt liked meeting a few of his favorite authors, and neither of them liked the booming, repetitive MJ music.
Then, there’s a bunch of Dungeons & Dragons talk (starts at the 14:50 mark and concludes at 37:22, if you’re interested) concerning some of the new projects and books that have hit the market, including:
- Matt’s Interview with Kierin Chase (view it here)
- Gamma World
- Pathfinder Advanced Player’s Guide and GameMastery Guide
Finally, we wrap up with news about a novelization of The Walking Dead and Robert Kirkman and answer the questions:
- Should we be excited or afraid of the Walking Dead novels?
- Is Robert Kirkman the new George Romero?
To find out, you’ve got to listen.

I agree on the comments about NYCC being more focused on the printed page. I also felt the TV/Film-related panels were much more intimate, and panelists were more approachable just after, making for a unique experience. NYCC’s big drawback was and is the program guide, which is incomplete, ad-filled, and difficult to follow.
I prefer the TV/Film stuff, but also love the book material, so SDCC is tops for that, but it was nice NOT to have to wait for hours on line, and still see some great panels.
Yes, there was a Walking Dead panel, and it was great! It was the only TV/Film panel filled to capacity, and they had to actually turn people away. I was lucky enough to be inside from earlier Sunday panels.
Absolutely! We had a similar problem at the booth when we managed to track down a program guide. I can remember flipping through it and then hoping no one would come by asking for directions or help with the guide as it offered few clues to me as to how or where to find things.
I wonder if the difference in the shows has something to do with their locations, too. San Diego, being so close to Hollywood is a natural fit (and test audience) for the movie and television industries to make appearances, announcements, screenings, and so forth. New York is home to many, many publishers large and small, and has always been a sort of “Publishing Mecca.” So it would fit that this would be the natural fit for that kind of vibe. Now, with NYCC growing and newly repositioned to early October, we’ll see if it doesn’t gain in Film and TV as it continues. After all, it’s now positioned before the big winter movie blitz time.
Anyway, these are just my ramblings. Thanks for listening, Rene, and for writing in with your thoughts about the two Conventions! Also, thanks for proving to me that I’m not crazy—I knew there was a Walking Dead panel going on, or at least I was really, really, really sure about it. And no surprise to hear that it both rocked and was filled to capacity. The buzz around that show…wow.
