I've got mixed feelings about this episode. I have NOT read the comics, so I don't have preconceived notions beyond hoping for a good zombie apocalypse yarn. That being the case, I'd assumed that they'd be dragging out reuniting Rick and his family until the last episode of the season. It would have been easy (and the standard tv series pattern) to throw a few obstacles between the survivors fleeing Atlanta and their arrival at camp. I was a little shocked that they jumped right in. Knowing what we do about Lori and Shane, I was on the edge of my seat during that moment. Not only was Rick and Carl's reunion very moving, but knowing about Lori and Shane made the moment riveting.

Unfortunately, the acts that followed couldn't possibly compete with the emotional intensity of those first two scenes. Lori's reveal during her argument with Shane was a nice moment, and Shane's explosion of anger at Ed ratcheted things up somewhat. However, "Chekov's gun" in this episode was surely the tool bag (and hack saw in particular), which was shown multiple times in Guts. Despite it making much more sense (and faster) to cut through the rusty metal bar, did anyone finish Guts *not* thinking that Merle would end up cutting off his hand?

I came away with the exact opposite feeling. This episode finally moved beyond the stock run-away-from-zombie-hordes plot and introduced some real character interaction. It's starting to feel like a show instead of some Steven King miniseries. And considering that the Atlanta set probably cost them the majority of their season one budget, you know they're going to be getting as much use out of it as possible. Does the show have pacing problems? Sure. Can you spot plot points coming from 100 miles away? Without question. But for the first time I feel like I may actually care whether certain characters live or die.

oops. I forgot to mention it's a pity Kirkman didn't think to use more crossbows in the books. Also, why didn't anyone raise some kind of noise when he killed a zombie head with the same bolt he used to kill their dinner?

That's just nasty.

The bit where Rick is always running off to do something or another is actually consistent with the book. It bothered me that he did it so much in that series. It's also consistent with the TV series. The first conversation with Shane(who annoyed the crap out of me from the get go) was about an argument Rick had with Lori. She accused him of not giving a damn about them.

The Walking Dead TV series hasn't lost my interest yet. Not like Rubicon did after three very long, not-going-anywhere episodes. I get the feeling it's struggling over how much of the books to put in the series. I really dig all the non-book moments. Glenn's car. The tank scene. The handcuffed hillbilly(Michael Rooker always owns his parts).

The series seems to be lacking a sense of actual doom. The books never expand outside the group's POV but somehow it felt like they were the only people left on Earth. Whenever they ran into new people I was always a bit surprised. Don't know why the series can't make the apocalypse actually feel apocalyptic. Maybe they can get a handle on it in the second season with at least 12 episodes.

What this show needs is more Sharktopus.

But seriously, I've been reading reviews suggesting that the drama is starting to drag the show a bit (is that possible, considering it's only three episodes in?). Could this be the difficulty of setting up the series or might we be seeing signs of larger plotting problems?
