While the web offers a lot of wonderful stuff for sci-fi, fantasy and horror fans, it’s important to remember that there are plenty of print magazines on your local bookstore shelves that deserve your attention. Some of them have been steadily supplying news and features to fandom for decades, while others are new publications bravely stepping into the breach. Over the next few weeks, I’ll be featuring a few of these magazines for your consideration. Today’s magazine is Fantasy & Science Fiction, known affectionately as F&SF by its many fans.
Founded in 1949, Fantasy & Science Fiction is an award-winning publication that has been the original publisher of classics like Daniel Keyes’ Flowers for Algernon, and Walter M. Miller’s A Canticle for Leibowitz. Throughout its long history F&SF has introduced readers to great authors like Stephen King, Robert A. Heinlein and Shirley Jackson.
When I asked editor Gordon Van Gelder why Suvudu readers should read F&SF, here’s what he had to say:
1) Because we publish great stories, great reviews, and great cartoons.
2) Because readers of LOCUS magazine have voted us best magazine for nine years running.
3) Because if you don’t, someone else will. Wait, that’s not right. Because if you do, you’ll be able to talk about it with your friends who also read it.
4) Because LOCUS reviewer Lois Tilton says we publish too many silly stories.
5) Because if you don’t, NATIONAL LAMPOON will kill the dog.
6) Because you’ll find a good mix of veteran writers (like Alan Dean Foster and Kate Wilhelm) and newcomers (like Alexandra Duncan, Kali Wallace, and Michael Alexander).
7) Because even the classified ads are entertaining.
