I thought I had seen it all…

George RR Martin

I thought I had seen the weirdest of the responses to our recently announced pub date for A DANCE WITH DRAGONS, but George’s UK editor just brought this to my attention.

Apparently, to paraphrase Ygritte: “You know nothing, Anne Groell.”

I am awed and humbled at the surreality of all this. It almost leaves me speechless:

But not quite.

I know there are still some doubting Thomases out there who don’t think the mansucript exists. Believe me, it exists. It might not be entirely done, but a large chunk of it exists.

Okay, enough with the understatement. A GIGANTIC chunk of it exists!

It is big.

It is exceedingly heavy. (I do like holding it, though.)

Since it is a gorgeous day, and I’m feeling like sharing, I’ll even let you read the first page, if your screen resolution is good enough.

Every other page–and there are many to savor!–is equally good, if not better. Could this be George’s best book yet? For me, the answer is a resonding: “Yes!” Folks, it is magnificent. WELL worth the wait, in my humble opinion.

We’ve come a long way, George and I, since the bad old days of the A GAME OF THRONES book launch at BEA!

Even if I did beat him to delivery by a walking, talking human being.

  1. I wonder if the manuscript weighs more than Amy did at birth — maybe George can say he wins if measuring the weight of the delivery…

I always loved that design for the Iron Throne. Especially the dragon’s head worked into it.

  2. Oh as someone who is on page 4 of the first book I am in awe of what I have to complete now. Btw love the BEA photo.

  3. Will says:

Wow! That’s gonna take some time to read!

  4. Anne Groell says:

Elio, a fascinating experiment! I will weigh the book when it is complete. Amy started life at 6 lbs, 13 oz. But I suspect that George will win the contest for heaviest baby–hands down–even if mine was a bit more timely… >;-)

While I really appreciate this post and pictures, I have to say that it is unfair to tease us with that picture of the first page, if you don’t link to a high-res photo. It’s my birthday, damn it! It would have been a wonderful present! :) )
On the other hand, I received Dragon Haven today. So live is still beautiful and full of joy… ;)

  6. That animation is legitimately hilarious.

  7. william says:

    Which wildcards book is that?

  8. Julie says:

random publishing question! How long does it take to go from final edited version to get into stores?

  9. Brude says:

Okay, just gonna say, I used to work in publishing and I have never seen a manuscript that enormous. What a monster!

I think the biggest I ever had to deal with was about half that size.

  10. teach says:

    It’s double spaced.

  11. learn says:

Yeah, it is double-spaced. And check out those page margins

You lost me at Ygritte. You see, for the life of me I don’t remember who she is. Thanks GRRM!

  13. ThorosOfMyr says:

    please don’t drop the manuscript…. seriously….
