I’ve not made a secret of my skepticism regarding the new Conan reboot, largely based on my devotion to the original works of Robert E. Howard. That being said, I have to say that this new trailer looks pretty awesome, and if director Marcus Nispel can turn in a halfway decent sword & sorcery flick with some authentic Hyborean Age flair then I may yet be pleased. While it’s hard to really know what’s going on from just the trailer, I’m almost positive that I saw a Pict warrior at :36 seconds, and the scene immediately following (:37 seconds) has to be Aquilonia or Nemedia. At :49 seconds we see some kind of tentacled beast or serpent – I can’t quite tell – that may suggest the presence of Stygian villains, perhaps worshipers of Set. It also seems like they’re borrowing some dialogue from the Conan stories. At 1:11 Conan says “Run from me, and I’ll tear apart the mounds to find you. I will follow you to Hell!” which sounds very similar to the oath he swears to Atali, in the story “The Frost Giant’s Daughter”: “You cannot escape me!” he roared. “Lead me into a trap and I’ll pile the heads of your kinsmen at your feet! Hide from me and I’ll tear apart the mountains to find you! I’ll follow you to hell!” Suffice it to say that my interest has been piqued, although I still have misgivings about 3-D. Nevertheless, I suspect I’ll be there on opening night.

This is one of those times we’ll have to agree to disagree. This looks awful, in my opinion, a cross between a crappy Stephen Sommers movie and a crappy Mike Newell movie. Throw some SyFy channel in there and, voila, you have this. Not to mention that director Marcus Nispel has already proven he can’t do epic with Pathfinder. I see no way in hell this is a good movie, let alone the great one Conan deserves.
I’m a fan of the books. I love the first movie. But throw B-rate actors and a B-rate director with crappy CGI into one movie? “CROM!”

The place at 37 is sadly neither Aquilona nor Nemedia, but a place only referred to as a “Greek-Influenced Monastery” in the script.
