Del Toro as an auteur has long been a subject of fascination and mystery for me. Thank you for reminding readers of some of the influences on his thinking that continue to unfold in his filmmaking. This is a great piece, and I was previously unaware of the new book. You and your readers might be interested in my interview with Victoria Nelson who has written on and elaborates on his Gothick cosmos which you mention (not by this name) in your essay: http://www.theofantastique.com/2011/05/11/victoria-nelson-guillermo-del-toros-gothick-cosmos/

I first fell in love with del Toro's movies when I saw Pan's Labyrinth. He's brilliant. I've made it my personal goal to see his older films. Cronos is bizarre but just as mesmerizing as his recent films. Great article Matt!
