Best of 2011: Inheritance by Christopher Paolini

Inheritance CoverIt’s December and the New Year is just around the corner. What better time than this to look back at some of this year’s best books, as well as some of next year’s most anticipated titles?

For the next few weeks, we at Suvudu will be sharing some of our favorites from 2011. After that, we’ll focus on what we think is going to make 2012 a great year for reading.

Today’s choice for Best of 2011:

Inheritance by Christopher Paolini

2011 saw some great books released. Only one of them, however, was the concluding volume in a beloved series that has millions of fans worldwide.

Inheritance by Christopher Paolini.

Inheritance is the final volume in the four-book Inheritance Cycle, which began with Eragon in 2003. Over the years, I’ve seen Paolini fans grow up and become much like Harry Potter fans—eager for the next book. It leads to an obvious conclusion. When bookstores sold 489,000 copies of Inheritance in 24 hours of its release on November 8th, I knew it was one of the biggest books of the year.

Here is a bit more about Inheritance:

Not so very long ago, Eragon—Shadeslayer, Dragon Rider—was nothing more than a poor farm boy, and his dragon, Saphira, only a blue stone in the forest. Now the fate of an entire civilization rests on their shoulders.

Long months of training and battle have brought victories and hope, but they have also brought heartbreaking loss. And still, the real battle lies ahead: they must confront Galbatorix. When they do, they will have to be strong enough to defeat him. And if they cannot, no one can. There will be no second chances.

The Rider and his dragon have come further than anyone dared to hope. But can they topple the evil king and restore justice to Alagaësia? And if so, at what cost?

This is the much-anticipated, astonishing conclusion to the worldwide bestselling Inheritance cycle.

Eragon has come a long way, from a world-ignorant farm boy to the most important Rider in the history of Alagaësia. The destiny he has embraced is upon him. Much like Christopher Paolini over the last decade, Eragon has grown up and come to the end of his story. What happens between Eragon and Galbatorix? What happens between Eragon and Arya? Does Saphira find a mate? Does Murtagh and Nasuada fall for the romance? So many questions…

It is a conclusion the fans have waited for—despite Christopher not resolving every plot point they wanted—and 2011 is stronger for it.
