The classic Tarot deck holds a number of seemingly sinister images: Death, the Devil, the Hanged Man. Those initiated into the art of reading fortunes know that these images do not necessarily indicate misfortune, but it’s hard to believe it when you’re looking at the Grim Reaper.
The Zombie Tarot Deck takes the supernatural doom and gloom up a notch in an inspired fashion. Every single card features the horror of the undead: hands reach from graves, children hide from their undead mothers, mad scientists experiment on helpless hungry corpses. It’s super spooky. But it’s something else, too. It’s hilarious. See, these aren’t your typical artifacts from a better-forgotten Goth phase, unless your definition of Goth is closer to Mad Men than the Nosferatu.
The Zombie Tarot Deck mixes cheery 1950s vintage art with its zombie horror, with results that are both hilarious and harrowing. Imagine a cross between the Ladies’ Home Journal and Dawn of the Dead and you’re halfway there. The world of the Zombie Tarot Deck looks like it could have slipped off the set of the 2006 cult horror comedy Fido.
The production standards are top notch: the set comes with a sepia-toned guide to reading the cards and the box it all comes in is sturdy black cardboard designed to look like an ammo box. Every card is unique, and even people who don’t usually care for zombies or Tarot decks will probably get sucked in, if my experiences with the cards are any indication. It’s rare that I ever outright “tell” someone to buy something, but the Zombie Tarot Deck is a notable exception. You need this. Get it now.
