It sounds like something from a cheesy horror movie: Soviet scientists drilling in the desert open up the doorway to hell. Well, it’s very real. In 1971 a group of Soviets drilling in the middle of Turkmenistan’s Karakum desert broke through to a cavern full of natural gas. Hoping to burn it all off and continue drilling, they lit a fire. That same fire is still burning over four decades later. Locals call it “the door to hell.”
