50 Page Fridays: Giles Kristian

Every Friday, we here @ Del Rey Spectra will place a 50 page excerpt of a selected title on Suvudu. Whether it is science fiction, epic fantasy, alternate history, horror, urban fantasy, paranormal, the possibilities are endless.

Giles Kristian’s Raven trilogy was published here in the states three months in a row so riveted fans only had to wait a few weeks before getting their hands on the next installment. Starting in August with BLOOD EYE, the first in the series, and SONS OF THUNDER which just made its debut earlier this week, lovers of war, history, and vikings could have their fill of blood-splattered pages and Kristian’s epic storytelling without having to wait the year or more that usually separates the books in a series. Next month, the final installment, ODIN’S WOLVES will complete the trilogy.

Read on as DRS editor Tracy Devine shares with us how Blood Eye, a story she fell in love with years ago, got a second chance.

“Some things are simply meant to be. I initially read the manuscript for Blood Eye, the first volume in Giles Kristian’s enthralling Raven series, in the midst of one of the mergers that periodically reorder our publishing landscape, and was captivated by the story of Osric, the orphan boy with a shadowy past, and the indelible band of Viking raiders who sense in him a kindred spirit, rename him Raven, and sweep him along on their adventures. Rarely are we lucky enough to find such a seamless marriage of storytelling brio, rich characterization, and historical authenticity. Through the strikingly fresh perspective of the fiercest warriors of their—or arguably any— age, the pages in my hands brought 9th century Europe viscerally alive in all its turmoil, terror, and elemental clash of cultures. Our newly combined lists were overcrowded, though, and I was heartbroken ultimately to have to let the book slip away. But I never forgot it.

Flash forward several years and two additional volumes, to a call from our sister company in London, alerting us to their marvelous series about Vikings by a star author that was enjoying enormous success in the UK. Raven at last was mine.

If you’ve thrilled to Thor; if you love the classic Kirk Douglas swashbuckler The Vikings; if you are drawn to adventure, and world-building, the rough camaraderie among brothers in arms, an impossible love, and seminal history in all its glory, I urge you to voyage along with Giles Kristian’s wolf pack from Dark Age Britain and the Continent to Constantinople and the farthest reaches of the known world, on their mesmerizing quest for immortality. Valhalla, we are coming, indeed.”
