Every week, I’ll be bringing you a comic book cover that I feel eclipses others out there—to the point I might just have to own it!
The BadAss Comic Book Cover for this week is for Ghost #1. Back when I first started collecting comic books in the early 90’s, there wasn’t much of a selection when it came to different genres. Superheroes were at the top of reading piles, mostly because there wasn’t much else to look at. DC Comics had just launched Vertigo though, offering some new supernatural type books (Sandman and Books of Magic among them) that strayed from superheroes. Oddly enough, it would take another decade before urban fantasy would take the fantasy publishing world by storm, creating a whole new area where these non-superhero stories could be told, embraced, enjoyed, and loved.
One of my favorite non-superhero books of that time was Ghost. A great premise. You can read more about it below in The Story section of this article.
Why do I love this cover though? The beautiful talent of painter Alex Ross. He takes a familiar Ghost and paints her to gorgeous appreciation. She is luminescent and glows, even though most people can’t see her. She takes up the majority of the panel, no one else getting full face time, and her arms go in and out of those whose pass her. I would be remiss not to mention I love the tone Ross gives her arms and legs; this is not a woman you would ever want to piss off. Yet her eyes are soft and searching, an obvious nod to her needing to discover her mysterious past and how she died. This is an ethereal, wonderful piece of art by one of the best in the business.
