It’s George R.R. Martin’s birthday! The A Game of Thrones author is 65 today. Happy birthday, George! It’s Friday, and I don’t know about you, but I’m happy to have an excuse to party it up. How about a toast?
Let’s all raise our glasses to the father of A Song of Ice and Fire with a toast. Sure, toasting to his health and continued happiness is always acceptable, but why not make our toast in the spirit of Westeros? Unfortunately, there aren’t a ton of toasts in the books that might suit this occasion, but we can look around the world for a few good ones.
How about this German one? Seems like a good sentiment, given how um… unpredictable… the lives of ASOIAF characters can be:
Genieße das Leben ständig!
Du bist länger tot als lebendig!
(Constantly enjoy life!
You’re longer dead than alive!)
This Irish toast seems like one the people in Flea Bottom might enjoy:
We know it is true that we’re wicked,
That our criminal laws are lax;
But here’s to punishment for the man
Who invented the income tax
Ah, and I can just hear this one at a disreputable roadhouse on the King’s Road. Again, Irish!
But the greatest love-the love above all loves,
Even greater than that of a mother…
Is the tender, passionate, undying love,
Of one beer drunken slob for another.
And one of unknown origin that might be appropriate for mercenaries or thieves:
May we always have the class
To rise and get up off our _ _ _
When there are deeds that must be done
Or novel ways to have fun
I could think of a handful of philanderers who would like this one:
Here’s to you my dear.
And to the dear that’s not here my dear.
If the dear that’s not here, my dear, were here, my dear,
Then I wouldn’t be drinking to you my dear.
How about a toast to wealth? I can think of a certain Lannister who might appreciate hearing this one:
To a prosperous individual-from what I hear, he doesn’t count his money, he measures it.
Look around and you’re sure to find a few more!
