That’s right. I’m going on vacation! My enthusiasm may sound odd but it is for a very good reason. I have not had a vacation in seven years. Seven. Years! Ever since I left managing one of the largest Barnes & Noble’s in the company, I have been freelance: maintaining several websites, blogging for Random House, and operating The Signed Page.
To say I am overdue for some time off is an understatement. WhileI will be enjoying tropical, white beaches, margaritas, snorkeling, and any number of other fun activities, I also plan on laying around on a beach and reading!
That’s where you come in. I have several books I can read. And I won’t be able to read them all while on vacation.
So what should I read? Here are the choices:
- The Way of Kings (reread) with Words of Radiance by Brandon Sanderson
- Star Wars: Honor Among Thieves by James S.A. Corey
- The Darkling Child by Terry Brooks
- Prisoner of Heaven by Carlos Ruiz Zafon
- Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman
The Stormlight Archives by Brandon Sanderson would be a natural progression of reading. I’m just now finishing up his newest offering, Steelheart, and fantasy readers are highly anticipating Words of Radiance.
Then there is Honor Among Thieves. I love the work that James S.A. Corey (the combined effort of Daniel Abraham & Ty Franck) has done. Having Corey write a Star Wars novel set during the time period directly after New Hope and featuring Han, Luke, and Leia? Umm, yes please!
The Darkling Child by Terry Brooks is a strange addition. The book doesn’t come out until 2015 but, as Terry’s long-time webmaster and all around Shannara-phile, I am given the duty of continuity editing his work. I can’t wait to read this newest book but it can wait for a while… or can it…?
Ever read Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon? If not, what is wrong with you?! One of my favorite books of all time. Zafon’s linage is so beautiful and evocative, it is The Prisoner of Heaven is the sequel to Wind. Can’t go wrong with one of my favorite writers, right?
As I’ve written here before, I am a huge Neil Gaiman fan. Ocean at the End of the Lane has been out for several months now but I still haven’t gotten around to it. No idea why. Just busy reading other things. This book is on most of the Best of 2013 lists, so it might be time for me to find out what all the love is about!
Help me! I can’t read them all on vacation but maybe I can put a huge dent into my reading pile right now!
