I was never an Oprah Winfrey fan coming up (I was more of a Montel Williams dude, honestly.) but I think that I would have remembered theTeenage Mutant Ninja Turtles being on her show anyway. Apparently not, because this particular slice of bizarro television sure doesn’t ring a bell.
The Turtles (plus April O’Neil and Shredder!) sit down for a chat with Winfrey and later put a musical performance, because, see, the Turtles aren’t just masters of the martial arts, they’re rock n’ roll party bros, too. I’m guessing that this particular appearance was timed to promote the first TMNT movie (1990), which I am proud (maybe) to say I saw in theaters.
I grew up with the Eastman and Laird comic books, and while the stories were obviously tongue-in-cheek, they were also a great bit darker than cartoon series (and aforementioned movie) they spawned. My buddies and I were nuts about ninjas, and we discovered the Turtles about the same times we started playing Dungeons & Dragons and other role-playing games. After we discovered Palladium’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Other Strangeness Role-Playing game, there was no going back. While I didn’t play a Turtle, (I would have – I loved Raphael.) I remember making a bunch of other cool animal mutant heroes. (One of them was a mutant frog trained as a sniper. The gamemaster had no sooner introduced the bad guy when I took a shot, rolled a critical and knocked the guy dead.)
Anyway, enjoy the video. (Thanks to Reddit’s amazing “Obscure Media” subreddit for the discovery.)
