One of the things about great entertainment is that it sets a new standard. The bar is officially raised, and similar movies – movies from the same genre – will be compared to it. Doubly so for movies that dare to pick up the story where the original left off. Talented directors can become victims of their own success. Sometimes sequel movies that would be okay on their own are considered trainwrecks because they must be considered as part of the overall story, and heaven help the director who is perceived as besmirching the legacy of a beloved film franchise. They’ll be judged in the court of fandom. And fandom can be harsh.
